Virtual Study Abroad Semester

Barcelona is a city of art and commerce, a space of beauty and layers of history. A maritime space among other monikers, we as designers were given the site, a set of two piers that jut into the Balearic Sea off of which we were meant to create a cultural space for the people of Barcelona. We were allowed to build either above, below, or on sea level and could choose to go further into the ocean or towards the road if we chose to. Teams could be chosen either of Texas A&M University, Clemson University, or a mixture of both.

Creating our Attraction:

After a lengthy mapping examination, we were meant to create a space that benefitted Barcelona culturally and paid homage to its commercial and maritime roots. We, as a team, chose to create an orchestral space and plaza for musicians and enthusiasts alike, a space in which the pier could still be enjoyed with sound going forth into both the city and out towards the sea.

Taking inspiration from the Chambered Nautilus species, our design incorporated light-weight carbon fiber construction similar to boat hull designs. As this was an orchestral space, acoustics had to be considered as well to ensure the audio quality of visitors both inside and outside of the building. As the name suggests it was supposed to be the culmination of ocean and sound waves with performances able to happen day and night, on the outcrops and within the chamber.
